Many older adults have gotten used to spending more time at home due to retirement, diminished joined them in staying at home. But for many older adults, being at home was not necessarily 24/7. Trips to the doctor, outings with friends and family, and trips to museums, theater, and concerts are now not an option. Bored? Frustrated? Tired of watching the news? Spring is here and that means spring cleaning! Do I hear cheers or groaning? If you want to really feel accomplished, tackle a drawer or a closet, whatever you have the strength or the physical capability to handle. You’ll enjoy the good feeling of actually throwing out something you don’t need but have been holding on to. The sanitation workers are still working. Take a lesson from them in bravery and courage. Take a lesson from one woman I know. She took a day off last week from her aches and pains to organize her bedroom and felt the best she has in months.
Don’t forget to go through your medicine cabinet and check for expired medications. Consult with your doctors regarding which are still fine and disposing of the others.
And don’t forgot that just like you are at home, so are your friends. Pick up the phone and call someone. There’s nothing like catching up with an old friend. Or call the cousin you haven’t spoken to in years. Now is the time to make someone’s day. Enjoy!
